Recommended Materials for Painting in the Serra de Sintra

Watercolour is probably the most satisfying medium because it dries quickly and you can get quick results. Gouache, pastels (soft or oil) and acrylics are also good mediums. Again, as mentioned earlier, oil painting is fine if you are driving.

Watercolour Materials
• Paper in Block
• A3 or A2 pad of 140lb or more - rough or not rough paper
• A4 or A5 is useful for quick sketches
• If you cannot find paper in block you can buy large sheets and cut them up

Brushes
• large pointed wash brush (they suggest Petit Gris Nš 24, Daler-Rowney)
• long thin pointed brush (rigger)
• flat brush (optional)
• one or two fine brushes (Nš 2, 3 or 4)

Paint
• Tubes or pans of paint (Windsor & Newton / Rowney / other)
• Palattes - usually the pans come with a small plastic area to mix paints / you may wish to bring more containers (plastic or enamel pans are fine)

Masking out liquid (optional)
- You can use the sharpened end of one of your brushes for this.

Acrylics
Support
• paper suitable for acrylics - they come in pads (ask an art shop) or canvas boaards (flat) which are small enough to fit into suitcase

Brushes
• large flat hogshair 3/4"
• medium hogshair filbert
• small round fiber brush
• you can also use one of your watercolour brushes for fine detail

Paint
• You can get a lot of mileage from mixing from a limited palette and concentrating on the primaries (red, yellow and blue)
• Tubes: cadmium yellow - cadmium red - cobalt blue or ultramarine - white - violet (optional to bring secondaries: green, orange, etc)

Oils
Support
• canvas boards or stretched canvas (or chipboard, MDF, cardboard)

Brushes and palette knives
• same as Acrylics
• cranked handle knives are useful 1 or 2

Paint
• same as acrylics

Turps (white spirit)
• you will also need a dipper, rags or paper towelling, soap for cleaning brushes after they have been cleaned in turps can also be found in art shops

Pastels
• Set of pastels (soft or oil or both)
• Different pale tones of soft (sugar or construction) paper suitable for pastel (should have a tooth). It is pleasing to use the tone of the paper for one of the tones in your work.
• Spray fixative

Misc.
• drawing pencils (2B, 4B, 6B - soft)
• soft white eraser or putty eraser
• sketch pad for pencil (A4 or A3)
• old shirt, etc., to work in
